What is Interlibrary Loan?
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service
that allows Lloydminster Public Library to borrow items from other
libraries for library patrons. Usually books are borrowed but
it is also possible to interlibrary loan magazine and newspaper
articles and some audio-visual material. The Interlibrary Loan
service is designed to supplement the Library's collection. Most
of the items brought in on ILL are out-of-print, very expensive, and/or
of limited popularity.
How long does it take?
Normally, it takes from 3 to 6 weeks to
get an item on Interlibrary Loan, sometimes a bit less, sometimes a bit
more. The total turnaround time for an Interlibrary Loan is
roughly 8 weeks. If something doesn't arrive in that time, we can
cancel the request or we may be able to re-order the item.
Does it cost anything?
Usually,
there is no charge for ILL material. This is almost always true
for books. However, there may a small charge for some magazine
and newspaper articles and for certain audiovisual requests.
How long can I have an Interlibrary Loan item for?
The
loan period for ILL items is set by the loaning library. Most of
the time, the loan period is about three weeks. Sometimes renewals
are allowed, sometimes they are not. It is important that all
Interlibrary Loan items are returned to Lloydminster Public Library on
time (overdue fines for ILL material are 50 cents a day).
What do I need to do to get an item through Interlibrary Loan?
We
need you to help fill out an Interlibrary Loan form. On that form
we record information about the item being requested and some
information about you eg. your name, telephone numbers, and library
card number. We also need your signature. Please note that
Interlibrary loan service is only available to those patrons who are
not suspended.
Are there any restrictions?
Many
different types of material can be acquired through Interlibrary
Loan. However, there are occasionally some restrictions. For
instance, reference books, whole magazine and newspaper issues, and
some newer titles may not be available for ILL. As well, many
items originally requested on Interlibrary Loan end up being purchased
by Lloydminster Public Library.
When is the Interlibrary Loan service available?
Interlibrary loans are handled through the Reference Desk during the library's regular hours of operation.
Material brought in on Interlibrary Loan are picked up and returned at the Reference Desk.
